Review- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Recently I purchased the most anticipated game of the year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (aka-COD: MW2).  This is the sixth COD game and the sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.  I had previously bought, played and beat COD 4: MW but it left me wanting more.  So I jumped at the opportunity to solidify my re-born gamer status with the new addition. The COD line of games published by Activision has a long standing history as being a well made first person shooter and Infinity Ward really puts the realism in the game.  The game picks up 5 years after the previous edition, where a new anti-terrorist group, Task Force 141, must fight a Russian terrorist organization and counter a Russian invasion of the United States. Several locations for the game include Afghanistan, Rio de Janeiro, Siberia, and Washington D.C.

CAMPAIGN: During Campaign mode your take on the role of several different characters and play in several different locations as the story progresses.  Your missions vary from rescuing hostages, standing your ground and planting explosives to complete you objectives all while eliminating your enemies.  You’re accompanied by other soldiers who help direct you through each mission.  As an added degree and depth to the game there are enemy laptops you need to locate and recover as intelligence.

COOPERATIVE: In Cooperative mode you can join forces with others, split screen or online, or play alone to complete missions in the Special Operations mode.  These are missions such as a snowmobile race against another player or operating an AC-130 Gunship to provide air support for troops on the ground.  Special Ops is divided into five separate groups of missions: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo. Each mission may be played at three difficulty levels: Regular, Hardened, or Veteran.  This is all separate from Campaign mode and also allows you to earn Trophies and Stars as you complete certain tasks as well as gain experience.  There are 23 missions and a total of 69 Stars to achieve.  At the end of each mission your stats are displayed such as total kills and how long it took you to complete the mission.

MULTIPLAYER: Just as it sounds multiplayer is where you get with several other players whether online or split screen and play different games.  The games consist of various modes based on your selection such as Free-For-All, Search & Destroy, Demolition, Domination, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag.  During play you can earn “Perks” like calling in AC-130, Predator Drone, Missiles or supplies to list a few.  There is even a game ending Nuke you can earn, and yes it does end the entire match.

REVIEW: Overall COD: MW2 is another exceptional first person shooter that lives up to its hype.  I sat down on Regular difficulty and beat the Campaign in just over six hours.  The game is relatively short but I think that this is also based on your level of difficulty.  On Veteran you have to play using solid tactics and extreme weapons utilization.  During Spec Ops missions if you choose Veteran it tells you “You will die!” and that’s no joke.  As a military member myself I found the military aspect is very accurate, though there are the usual “That could never happen” times during the game but hey, it’s a game.  So if you’re looking for an outstanding shooter game, great story, and a real challenge pick up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, it’s available on PS3, XBOX 360 and PC.
