Earlier this week Barnes and Noble launched their new e-reader The Nook. I’m a huge gadget fan, so when I laid my peepers on this new toy I about nerdgasmed. I need to start off by saying that I’m a huge reader, but I’m not the biggest supporter of the e-reader craze. It’s not that I don’t totally drool over the Sony Reader or Kindle, it’s more that I just love the feel and smell of an actual book–and honestly, you can’t take the readers into the bath for fear it will get wet, or use it during those 15 minutes of technoblackout while flying. I love holding a book and reading it at my own speed. Maybe I’m an old soul, but it’s just very comforting to me.
So, the reason for my near explosion of nerdy pleasure comes from actually LOOKING at the new Nook. Yeah, it’s got the digital ink paper thingie, wifi AND 3G, and what’s really cool, it has room for additional disk space. But the coolest thing to me is that the book covers are displayed in color at the bottom of the whole thing. I know the Kindle is lighter and the Sony Reader cheaper and more friendly to other formats (and they won’t remove your book like Amazon did this summer with Brave New World), but there is something that calls me to this little colored display. I just want to get my hands on it an try it out. So, Barnes and Nobel, if you hear me, SEND ONE MY WAY!!! I will play with it, and love it, and write my feelings about it! Seriously, I totally will.
Oh, and if any of these guys come up with “paperback book smell,” bottle that noise and add it as an option to the readers!

Thanks!! How totally timely! I was ALMOST settled on a Kindle… now it’s time to go shopping and reconsider!
Also consider the Sony Reader! It’s getting the best hype within the publishing industry and it reads more than just on format, which is important when you want to be able to read without the limitations of the Kindle. Sony and Nook both have their own hard drives, and you don’t have to worry about Amazon taking back your books!
Don’t start making me have buyers remorse over my Kindle.
Apple has a book reader coming out in the next few months as well. 10.1″ screen, super thin, and they are working with a lot of news outlets to create content for it.
